  1. Skip HP. HP sucks. See below:

@Stephen: Lifehacker didn’t do the study. Square Trade did the study. Lifehacker is just one of many places it was given exposure online. : )

None of the previously named can go against a custom built computer, it can be perfectly built according to your needs and budget, a correctly built custom computer can out perform an alienware, no contest.

  3. I just got a great Sony at best buy with an i3 processor, 4 GB of RAM, and a 320 GB hard drive for about $650. Also has a card reader, HDMI video and VGA video outputs, and an eSATA port. It has a cam.

I fix computers for a living. I’m partial to Sony and Toshiba. Dell, and Lenovo are OK. I don’t care for HP/Compaq, or Acer. You shouldn’t have to spend anywhere near $2k to get what you need. You can get very powerful Windows based laptops for under $1,200. For $2k you could get a MAC and run both windows and snow leopard. I don’t advise doing this unless you really have your heart set on learning the MAC. Apple makes excellent systems, but there is a learning curve if you are new to them.

Stephen’;s post is excellent. The system he’s recommending is a very powerful gaming system. In my opinion it’s overkill if you want to watch movies, listen to music, and surf. I could never get behind the idea of a gaming laptop. I worry about heat problems, but the i7 processor is very efficient. If you want to do cutting edge gaming that’s probably a good choice.

    I agree with Zack8356:

"None of the previously named can go against a custom built computer, "

But you’re looking for a laptop. Custom computers are usually desktop gaming systems. I’ve never seen a custom laptop.

  11. Based on the Laptop Reliability Study that Life Hacker did, the laptops that are the best for reliability are from Asus, Toshiba and Sony.

Based on what you want to do and your rather generous price range, I would recommend this Toshiba laptop from Newegg. This laptop has more than enough power and features to do everything that you want.
